Wukkin'

Police work is showing results. The latest Front Street robbery response, the scooter controls, the arrests and seizures, these are concrete actions. KPSM is doing its job, units are deploying, suspects are being caught, evidence is being recovered.
Leaders, of course, still have work to do. Crime hurts residents and tourism alike, it creates fear, it erodes confidence. Authorities, the private sector, and community voices must stay engaged, ask hard questions, and keep the pressure on prevention and follow through.
We must also simultaneously acknowledge that enforcement alone is not enough. The underlying causes must be addressed: cost of living relief, youth opportunities, skills training, second chances for offenders. Some of these, such as proper rehab services, have been announced by the Minister of Justice for which she has secured funding. These issues must be addressed to see a real turn-around.
In the meantime, businesses and residents must remain vigilant at a time when crooks seem to be playing monkey-se-monkey-do. At the same time, they should take assurance from recent police work. The people charged with protection are making arrests, the targeted operations have been communicated to the public, the message is clear. We cannot say truthfully that we do not know what the police is up to. What we must do however, is continue to support them when they ask for such.
Because in plain local parlance, the cops are wukkin’.
