Why has MP Raeyhon Peterson not yet resigned now that he is under investigation?

This is not a personal attack on the Member of Parliament. It is, however, a matter of principle, credibility, and accountability. For years, MP Peterson and his party, the Party for Progress, have positioned themselves as champions of higher standards in public life. They have spoken often about integrity, transparency, and the need for the people of St. Maarten to expect more from those who seek public office. They have urged the public to hold elected officials accountable. That is a message many people embraced and respected.

It is precisely because of that message that this moment matters.

When a public official is under investigation, especially one serving in Parliament, resignation should not automatically be seen as an admission of guilt. It should be understood as an act of respect for the office, for the institution, and for the people. Parliament is not just another workplace. It is the highest democratic institutions in the country. Its members are entrusted with lawmaking, oversight, and representation. When one of its members is under serious scrutiny, it inevitably raises questions about the credibility of the institution as a whole.

Resigning helps protect Parliament from unnecessary damage. It shows that the office is bigger than the individual. It demonstrates that public trust is not something to be managed with talking points, but something to be guarded through action. It sends the message that those who make the rules for others are also prepared to subject themselves to a higher standard.

This is especially important for the PFP. The party has built much of its identity around the idea of doing politics differently. It has spoken about changing the culture of governance and restoring trust in public office. If that message is to mean anything, then it must apply most of all when it is uncomfortable. Standards are easy to defend when they are meant for opponents. Their true value is tested when they must be applied to your own.

Supporters of the PFP should not see these questions as betrayal. They should see them as necessary. If the party is real, if it is genuine, if it truly stands on the principles it has promoted for so long, then it must be willing to uphold those standards even now. In fact, especially now. The people are not asking for perfection. They are asking for consistency.

They are asking: if you told us to demand better from our political representatives, why should that not begin with you? If you said the people must hold leaders accountable, why are those same people now expected to stay quiet? If you insisted that public service must be rooted in ethics and responsibility, then why remain in office while under investigation?

This is not about personal dislike. It is about public duty. It is about whether leaders truly believe the standards they preach. And it is about whether Parliament, and the country, can trust that principle still matters when political cost is involved.
