St. Maarten, we need to stop playing checkers in a chess world

St. Maarten is tired. And not “I need a nap” tired. We are system tired, society tired, soul tired. You can hear it everywhere: in the press, in the supermarkets, at the bus stops, in Parliament, and in the quiet moments at home. The frustrations are real and they’re growing. People want relief from GEBE struggles. They want crime to stop inching closer to their front doors. They want their kids to have direction and purpose. They want infrastructure that doesn’t look like it’s begging for mercy. And they want to feel safe, stable, and seen.

But instead of addressing the foundation, we keep throwing paint over cracked walls. We keep acting like we’re in a backyard board game when everyone else around us is playing a global strategy match. This is a chess world, and we’re still out here playing checkers.

We react instead of anticipate. We apply patches instead of solutions. We recycle the same debates while the island keeps shifting under our feet. And the biggest mistake we make is pretending that all of this is the fault of whoever currently holds office. These issues were not born yesterday. They were grown, fertilized, ignored, and passed down. We inherited a system built on shortcuts, silence, and survival. Yet somehow, we expect instant transformation without cultural or structural change.

At the same time, yes, the people are justified in their frustration. Bills are piling up, crime feels too close, kids feel adrift, and those trying to build something honest keep hitting political potholes and bureaucratic walls. Everyone is tired of the excuses, the speeches, the promises, and the delays.

But here’s the truth: nothing changes until mindsets change.

And that includes everyone.

Government: get it together. Have your kumbaya moment, whatever it takes. Stop fighting each other and start strategizing for this country. Step into the same room, lock the door if you must, and do not come out until you have a plan, a united front, and a clear mission. We need you to stop acting like scattered pieces and start behaving like the Avengers. Assemble, align, and execute. This island cannot afford leadership that is consumed with egos and agendas when the house is literally on fire. Lead with courage, not competition. Reform with intention, not reaction. And for once, finish what you start.

Parliamentarians, it’s time to come home. This country does not need another travel report or another conference photo-op. Every hour spent abroad is an hour not fixing the issues right in front of you. You approve the budget but never cut your own costs. You criticize spending but still book the flights. And then every December, we get the same tradition: hand out hams, pose with turkeys, and call it community love. This year, spare the theatrics. The people need structural change more than seasonal charity.

For the people, shift your mindset. Move from dependency to opportunity. Do it responsibly. No country grows when its citizens only wait to receive. A healthy nation is built by people who rise, innovate, collaborate, and create. Everything you want this island to be starts with how you think and how you show up.

For businesses, stop closing the door on people who deserve second chances. You cannot preach community while denying redemption. Some of the strongest workers, leaders, and innovators come from stories of recovery and turnaround. Give people a shot to rise; you might be surprised who becomes your greatest asset.

And for those looking for work, show up and do the work. Be respectful. Be willing. Don’t let pride or shortcuts destroy your future. And please, stop believing that crime is an option. Crime is not a business plan. Crime is not a lifestyle. Crime is not a legacy. Karma is real. Consequences are real. Fear is real. And at the end of the day, is the stress and danger ever truly worth it? Protect your future the right way. Build something you can be proud of. Help your neighbor. Don’t rob them. We are one people. We are not a hierarchy of who thinks they’re better than who. We rise together or we fall together.

So let’s all stop driving each other crazy and finally get our act together. No more excuses. No more acting small. No more pretending everything is fine. It’s TIME!

Coming soon, a country you once knew:

SXM Do Better, Be Better.
