Reckless talk of a “strike” to “shut it down” puts lives at risk

Dear Sir,

I am writing as a concerned resident who watched Members of Parliament flirt with disaster. Telling first responders to “shut it down” or pushing civil servants toward a “strike” is reckless, plain and simple. MPs know, or they SHOULD know, that civil servants cannot strike under the law, yet some still encouraged them on, risking people’s jobs and the public’s safety.

MP Francisco Lacroes was the worst, “let’s shut it down, let’s all of us go on strike.” That is not leadership, that is a stunt. First responders are not bargaining chips. The opposition MPs should be telling workers to keep the public safe while they secure written commitments and hold government to it, not calling for a shutdown. Reckless behavior.

MP Omar Ottley thanked emergency workers and supported a written commitment, which is fair, but then he warned about airport fire services joining and flight operations being hit, and “real operational consequences.” That talk, in the middle of high season preparations, only feeds the idea that a shutdown is leverage. Responsible leaders lower the temperature, they do not normalize the threat. Irresponsible behavior.

To those saying a go slow will only affect “minor” emergencies, I have a simple question, what is minor when it is your family. How do you know my migraine will not tip into a stroke. How do you know my light headedness is not a sign of something serious. What if a sprained ankle with an open cut gets infected and turns worse. You do not get to choose which calls become life or death. If someone dies because MPs encouraged people to "shut it down", who carries that responsibility? Will any MP stand up and say, that was on me.

I am most disappointed in MP Darryl York. I had some hope for him. Instead I saw him sitting there while this talk went on, saying Parliament is told one thing and unions another, and promising to push inside and outside Parliament. That is fine, but leadership means drawing a line when colleagues cross it. Sitting in the room while people are told to shut it down, while a meeting of Parliament is happening down town Parliament no less, changed my mind. Political opportunists, the lot of you!

It's like these MPs can only think about the next vote and have no clue what their job descriptions actulaly are. Workers deserve respect, yes. But calling for a strike or telling first responders to shut it down is short sighted, risky, ignorant and irresponsible.
