celebrating christmas lights on a casino! we are special hypocrites!

I am honestly ashamed and confused by what I am seeing in St. Maarten.

For years we have been hearing politicians, church leaders, and social workers talk about how casinos help push many of our people into debt and poverty. Reports have been written, speeches have been made, and fingers have been pointed at “the casino culture” on the island. Yet today, we are proudly celebrating the lighting of Christmas decorations on a casino.

Not in Philipsburg. Not in any of our districts. Not at a school, a church, a community center, or a senior home. A casino. I have to ask: why? How much money did that casino put into this project? Is this about culture and Christmas, or about promoting an establishment that lives off people losing money?

To make it worse, we now see the head of the Department of Culture making and sharing videos of her choir singing at this casino. Christmas is supposed to mark the birth of our Lord and Savior, but we are using this season to glorify a gambling house. Is this really the best we can do as a country?

We like to talk about values, about protecting our youth, about poverty, about “our people suffering.” Meanwhile, we are literally turning on Christmas lights at a place that will gladly take the last Christmas money out of someone’s pocket. Families are struggling to buy food and gifts, and yet we are dressing up a casino as if it is the heart of our celebration.

Where are all the Members of Parliament who stand on the floor and condemn casinos and their impact on society? Where are the loud voices now? Not one seems to be saying a word. I want to see which of them will show up smiling at this lighting ceremony.

What message are we sending to our children and to the wider Kingdom? That we are so desperate for sponsors that we will wrap a casino in Christmas lights and call it culture? That we are fine mixing the language of faith and “goodwill to all” with a place designed to separate people from their money?

Then we act surprised when St. Maarten is laughed at, or when serious questions are asked about our links with casino bosses. We are doing this to ourselves. I am not saying shut everything down or pretend casinos do not exist. I am saying we cannot have it both ways. We cannot spend years warning the public about the damage of gambling, then turn around and put Christmas center stage at a casino as if that is normal.

We are becoming specialized professional hypocrites in St. Maarten, and many of us feel it in our gut, even if we are afraid to say it out loud. Christmas should lift people up, not promote the very places that will pull them further down.
