GREAT BAY--Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling announced that the Ministry of Justice will observe Justice Week 2025, taking place from July 11 to July 17, under the theme “We Are Justice.” She said this year’s theme serves as a reminder that justice is not only upheld by institutions, but by the men and women who serve within them every single day.
She invited the public to pause, reflect, and recognize the quiet strength of justice workers across St. Maarten.
“These individuals are more than just staff or job titles, they are the backbone of our justice system,” said Minister Tackling. “They show up, even when resources are limited and the work is heavy. They carry the weight of justice with resilience, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty.”
The Minister encouraged the community to acknowledge and appreciate the service of justice workers throughout the week:
“If you know a justice worker, or even pass one, say thank you. Offer a word of encouragement. A small gesture can mean more than you think.”
Justice Week 2025 also comes at a pivotal moment in the Ministry’s work to rebuild trust, modernize institutions, and expand rehabilitation and reintegration pathways, especially for young adults between the ages of 18 and 30.
Over the past months, the Ministry has been focused on:
Reducing the immigration backlog
Advancing final processing of the Elbase batches
Deepening regional and international partnerships
Progressing with the construction of a new prison facility in collaboration with international partners.
At the same time, Minister Tackling emphasized that rehabilitation cannot wait for a new building. This week, she will be meeting with the team behind Tur Cos Ta Posibel in Aruba, an EU-funded program focused on humane and effective rehabilitation. The visit is part of broader efforts to implement similar programs locally, possibly in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
“These conversations are essential as we push forward a justice system that not only enforces the law but gives people, especially our youth, a fair chance to rebuild their lives,” said Tackling.
As part of her commitment to transparency and engagement, the Minister also announced plans to launch a dedicated communication line, allowing the public to submit questions and reflections directly to the Ministry. She noted that responses may be shared in future press briefings or through official channels to ensure the public remains part of the conversation.
“As I reflect on my eight months in office, one thing is clear: justice cannot thrive in isolation. It must remain in constant dialogue with the people it serves,” Minister Tackling concluded. “I am proud to stand beside those doing the hard work, and I look forward to continuing this journey, with heart, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to building a justice system that works for everyone.”
