THAILAND--The St. Maarten Baseball & Softball Federation has gained full affiliation with the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). President Natasha Richardson and Treasurer Howard Villarreal received the official plaque during the WBSC General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, which legitimizes, internationally, the federation's baseball and softball governance mandates.
Baseball and softball leaders and delegates from the WBSC community, which includes 191 Members and 15 Associate Members, gathered in Bangkok to discuss and decide the future direction and global strategy of the sport, in addition to voting on Baseball/Softball’s expansion through new Members. Full WBSC affiliation transforms a local baseball or softball federation into a globally recognized member of the international sporting community, opening access to competition, funding, and developmental tools that strengthen the sport’s future at every level.
Here’s what it means in practical terms:
𝟏. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲
Full WBSC membership gives a country official recognition as the governing authority for baseball and/or softball. This allows its athletes to compete under their national flag in all WBSC-sanctioned events, including World Cups, regional championships, and Olympic qualifying tournaments. It also ensures that the country’s federation is recognized by other global sports bodies and sponsors.
𝟐. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠
Member countries gain access to WBSC development initiatives, including grants, equipment donations, coaching certification courses, umpire training, and youth development support. These programs are often funded through WBSC and Olympic Solidarity, helping smaller or emerging nations grow their talent base and infrastructure.
𝟑. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
Full membership allows national teams, senior, youth, and women’s, to enter WBSC’s global ranking system and participate in international tournaments. This exposure improves the quality of local players, provides benchmarking against higher-ranked nations, and creates more scouting opportunities for athletes abroad.
𝟒. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭
The WBSC offers guidance on setting up proper governance, anti-doping compliance, and event management systems. Federations receive assistance with tournament organization, scoring systems, and official rule updates, ensuring the sport develops according to international standards.
𝟓. 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Only WBSC-affiliated federations can enter qualifying pathways for baseball or softball in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, and other major events. This opens doors for national athletes to represent their country on the world stage.
𝟔. 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Participation in WBSC-sanctioned events earns ranking points, allowing the country to be listed in official world rankings. This increases global visibility and can attract investment, sponsorships, and bilateral training partnerships.
𝟕. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬
Full affiliation prioritizes gender balance and youth participation. The WBSC encourages and funds grassroots initiatives—such as youth academies, school leagues, and girls’ softball programs, helping countries build a sustainable pipeline of talent.
The Sint Maarten Sports Federation extended congratulatory words on Saturday: "Heartfelt congratulations to our member federation on officially gaining full affiliation with the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), a monumental step for the continued growth and recognition of baseball and softball on our island. This achievement opens new doors for our athletes and teams to proudly represent Sint Maarten on the international stage, participate in WBSC-sanctioned events, and build stronger pathways for youth development through these sports. We look forward to seeing the continued development and success of baseball and softball in St. Maarten."
