GREAT BAY--If you were impressed with the Christmas lights last year, the same group behind the 2024 initiative will be back to light up the season, complete with a new name and the same passion for the holidays, led by Anella Persaud-Brooks.
"Project Us SXM Foundation" will seek to expand its island-wide Christmas lighting effort this season, building on last year’s community-driven start. This, despite a reported unexpected intent of Ministry VROMI and/or GEBE to attached a heavy fee to the project.
In 2024 the team had no formal name, they funded installations out of pocket with help from private citizens, local businesses, and GEBE. This year the group has formalized as Project Us SXM Foundation and plans a wider rollout to bring more cheer and ambience across St. Maarten.
The project is non-commercial, the foundation earns no revenue, and all work is for the community. The goal is to lift holiday spirit at home, encourage families to enjoy the season on island, and support evening commerce in well lit public spaces. Planning began early, suppliers and installation partners are engaged, and preparations are underway.
GEBE will provide bucket trucks and make safe electrical connections to designated poles. Putting aside the good cheer and cooperation, the foundation was recently informed of a reported plan for GEBE and/or Ministry VROMI to attach a significant fee for the use of light poles. These figures are unconfirmed, reports place the amount near 10,000 US dollars for Christmas lights. The foundation is seeking clarification, it will adjust plans as needed once facts are confirmed.
The initiative derives no revenue and is built on partnerships to deliver a festive season for the residents of St. Maarten, which also inspires a mood for organizations to host many more Christmas related events. In turn, people choose to stay on island and not travel broad to experience what they feel is a more festive season, rather than a Caribbean Christmas.
Project Us SXM is eager to partner with the Ministry of VROMI, GEBE, and other agencies to ensure permits, safety standards, and access to infrastructure are handled correctly. The foundation also proposes enhancements at key roundabouts, including durable fixtures and ornaments that can be reused each year to reduce costs.
In 2024 the island’s holiday lighting became a subject of public debate, and information gaps led to speculation. Despite that, the effort moved forward with visible installations and government collaboration. The Ministry of TEATT publicly described a festive lighting project in cooperation with a private foundation during the 2024 season, aimed at drawing residents and shoppers into town.
Project Us SXM Foundation will maintain public updates through its social channels, which documented last year’s pole-light installations and community participation. You can follow their efforts via Facebook Here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61581276330577 or search Project Us SXM.
