COLE BAY--In an emotionally resonant address commemorating the 40th anniversary of St. Maarten Flag Day, President of Parliament Sarah Wescot-Williams touched on the enduring pride, symbolism, and unity embodied by the national flag.
Delivering her remarks before a crowd of dignitaries, students, and citizens, Wescot-Williams declared: “The St. Maarten flag belongs ahead of any other flag and any other symbol here on St. Maarten.”
She firmly dispelled any misconceptions about the flag’s status or future, stating, “We have never, ever questioned or wanted to change the flag of St. Maarten. Why? Because we believed in it. We believed in the symbols. We believe in what it represents.”
The President recalled the momentous occasion 25 years ago when the St. Maarten flag was raised as the Netherlands Antillean flag was respectfully lowered, a defining moment that, she noted, was carried out with pride and a deep sense of responsibility.
“Forty years ago, the people of St. Maarten made a pact with the world, that this flag represents us,” Wescot-Williams said. “Regardless of what we face, that flag and all its symbols remain alive in our hearts. It is our unity, our courage, our environment, our landmarks, our spirit as a people.”
Addressing the younger generation, many of whom participated in the day’s ceremony, Wescot-Williams called on them to embrace the legacy they have inherited and to carry it forward. “If you ever feel downhearted, remember what this flag stands for. It’s more than fabric, it is a living symbol of our past, our hope, and our shared future.”
She also extended heartfelt thanks to the teachers and the Department of Sports and Culture for preparing the students who performed during the celebration and served as the master of ceremonies, calling their efforts “wonderful” and reflective of the promise and pride of the nation.
As the national colors flew throughout the gathering, Madame President concluded with a stirring appeal: “May the flag of St. Maarten continue to fly high. May it always represent us, regardless of the challenges we face. That responsibility for this country and its people rests on all of us. Happy Flag Day, St. Maarten.”
