GREAT BAY--Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT), Hon. Grisha Heyliger-Marten, on Wednesday confirmed that preparations for the resumption of construction on the Philipsburg Marketplace are officially underway.
The Minister announced that her ministry, in collaboration with the Royal Caribbean Group and the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment, and Infrastructure (VROMI), is currently reviewing the final architectural drawings for the project.
“These technical discussions are critical,” said Minister Heyliger-Marten. “They ensure that the project’s design aligns with our broader infrastructure and operational goals. We are working diligently to get this right for both our vendors and the people of St. Maarten.”
In parallel with the design phase, the Minister also revealed that dialogue is ongoing between the Cabinets of TEATT and Finance to explore potential relief measures for vendors, if and where feasible or possible.
“While this is all the information we can share at this time, I want to make it clear that the Philipsburg Marketplace remains a top priority for this Ministry,” she emphasized. “We are committed to transparency and will provide further updates as milestones are achieved.”
The redevelopment of the marketplace is viewed as a key component of economic revitalization in the Philipsburg area, aiming to provide a modernized, functional space for local vendors while enhancing the experience for both residents and tourists.
