SABA--Concerned by the continued deterioration of Cove Bay, the Party for Progress, Equality, and Prosperity (PEP) is calling on the community to take action. Led by Island Council members Julio A. Every and Saskia Janell Matthew, the party has launched a volunteer-driven cleanup initiative in response to persistent complaints from residents about the area’s worsening condition.
While acknowledging that the cleanup won’t address every issue facing Cove Bay, the organizers stress that it marks a vital first step. “It’s a small but important beginning, and we can’t do it without the community,” PEP stated.
The party is encouraging volunteers to step forward, particularly those with access to trucks or heavy equipment to help with debris removal. Contributions of supplies or materials are also welcomed.
A final cleanup date will be announced once enough participants have committed. Tentative date is late July.
Residents interested in supporting the effort are urged to contact the organizers. “This is our opportunity to show the power of community-driven action,” PEP added.
Cove Bay, like many coastal areas across the region, has been severely affected by this year’s overwhelming influx of sargassum seaweed. The 2025 sargassum season has been one of the worst on record in the Caribbean, with record blooms choking beaches, harming marine life, and threatening tourism. While long-term solutions require regional cooperation and scientific investment, PEP views the upcoming cleanup as a vital way to reclaim local spaces in the face of an ongoing environmental challenge.
