New online submission system for Business Licenses goes live today

July 9, 2025

GREAT BAY--Minister Grisha Heyliger-Marten of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) has announced that the new digital submission platform for business licenses officially goes live today on the Government of St. Maarten’s website.

Minister Heyliger-Marten made the announcement as part of a broader update on the ongoing transformation of the Department of Economic Licenses. The new system allows entrepreneurs and business owners to submit license applications online, eliminating the need for in-person appointments and paving the way for faster, more transparent service delivery.

“This is a major milestone in our efforts to modernize the department,” said Minister Heyliger-Marten. “The new platform replaces outdated, inefficient systems and is designed to reduce bureaucracy while making it easier for our business community to get the support they need.”

The rollout of the online system coincides with the temporary closure of the Economic Licenses Service Desk at the Public Service Center, which began on July 1 for a four to six-week period. During this time, the department is working to clear the backlog of pending requests, improve internal workflows, and transition to a walk-in model once the desk reopens.

Applicants who previously had appointments are being contacted and assisted with the new online process. For those needing additional support, the SEDC at the Miss Lalie Center is offering free submission assistance. Appointments can be made by calling 542-8898 or reaching out via Facebook or Instagram at SEDC St. Maarten.

Minister Heyliger-Marten also encouraged aspiring or restructuring entrepreneurs to consult with the Accelerated Community Development Center, which provides affordable training in marketing, business administration, tax filing, and more, starting at just $50.

Key improvements underway include:

A fully digital license application and document submission system
Phasing out inefficient manual processes
Eliminating appointment-only requirements in favor of a flexible walk-in model

“These are not cosmetic changes, they’re part of a strategic overhaul to ensure a faster, fairer, and more responsive licensing process,” said Heyliger-Marten. “We recognize that MSMEs are the backbone of our economy, and we are committed to removing the barriers that slow them down.”

The public is also invited to meet the Economic Licenses team at the upcoming GO LOCAL event on July 24, 2025, on the Philipsburg Boardwalk, held in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce. Visitors will have the opportunity to receive updates, ask questions, and share feedback.
