CAY HILL--World Breastfeeding Week 2025 officially opened on August 1 at the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) with a ceremony led by Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (VSA), Richinel Brug. The event brought together mothers, infants, healthcare professionals, and community partners to launch a week of activities focused on maternal wellness and sustainable support systems for breastfeeding.

The event aligned with this year’s international theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” and highlighted St. Maarten’s commitment to promoting breastfeeding as a cornerstone of public health. Minister Brug addressed the gathering with reflections on the strength and resilience of mothers, acknowledging both the natural and demanding aspects of breastfeeding. His remarks underscored the importance of shared responsibility in supporting maternal and infant health.

"World Breastfeeding Week is more than a calendar event. It’s a call to action. A reminder that when we prioritize breastfeeding, we’re not just supporting nutrition, we’re investing in public health, bonding, emotional well-being, and economic resilience. It’s like nature’s miracle meal plan, always ready, always warm, and best of all, no bottles to wash," the Minister said jokingly.

Throughout his address, the Minister recognized the many organizations involved in organizing and supporting the week’s events, including Collective Prevention Services, the White & Yellow Cross, Care Foundation, and others. He noted the significance of addressing challenges such as postpartum depression, access to healthcare services, the role of fathers in caregiving, and the importance of insurance coverage for maternal and child health.

The week’s programming includes wellness activities such as yoga walks, informational sessions, and the Mom’s Health Fair at the Belair Community Center. These events are designed to educate, uplift, and equip families with the tools and information needed to navigate the early stages of parenthood.

The Minister’s message focused on building a system in which mothers feel seen, supported, and valued—not only during World Breastfeeding Week, but throughout the entire maternal journey. He emphasized that when mothers are well-supported, families and communities are more likely to thrive.

“As Minister of VSA and someone who grew up surrounded by strong women, I want to say: I see you. I admire you. And I support you,” Minister Brug told attendees.

The event at SMMC served as both a celebration and a reaffirmation of the country’s ongoing commitment to advancing maternal and child health through coordinated support and inclusive healthcare strategies.
