GREAT BAY--Day one of the CARIFTA Trials brought excitement to the track as Micheal van de Veer delivered an impressive comeback performance to secure his qualifying mark for the CARIFTA Games in the 100 meters.

After missing last year’s CARIFTA Games due to injury, van de Veer made a strong return, sprinting to a lifetime best of 10.66 seconds, well ahead of the qualifying standard of 10.95. His standout performance not only earned him a place among the qualifiers, but also marked a significant milestone in his return to competition.

Van de Veer’s performance was met with celebration from teammates, coaches, and supporters who have followed his journey back to peak condition. Known by many as the “comeback king,” he demonstrated determination, resilience, and the rewards of disciplined preparation.

Head coach Abdule Wattley expressed pride in the young sprinter’s achievement, highlighting van de Veer’s focus and commitment throughout his recovery and training period. Wattley said the result reflects the athlete’s dedication and the hard work invested in returning stronger than before. He also extended special thanks to Micheal’s mother, Mirelle Van de Veer, for the trust placed in him during the recovery process.

With this performance on the opening day of trials, van de Veer has set an encouraging tone for the CARIFTA season and added to the growing excitement surrounding St. Maarten’s national athletics program.
