Govt allocates XCG 20,000 to stray animal program backed by Minister Brug, MP Lacroes

GREAT BAY--The Government of St. Maarten has allocated XCG 20,000 to support a targeted sterilization and public education initiative addressing the island’s growing stray animal population. The funding, confirmed by Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor Hon. Richinel Brug, comes in response to a request from the Animal Welfare Foundation and a motion introduced by Member of Parliament Francisco A. Lacroes during the 2025 Budget Debate in June.

The program will cover spaying and neutering procedures, post-operative care, and public awareness campaigns promoting responsible pet ownership. While the motion did not receive broad support in Parliament, it proposed funding through the Ministries of TEATT and VSA, which has now materialized through this initial allocation.

MP Lacroes underscored the urgency of tackling the issue, citing public health concerns such as leptospirosis and ringworm, which pose particular risks to children and other vulnerable groups. “This is not only about animal welfare; it’s about public health and community safety,” Lacroes said. “We must act now to prevent further suffering and ensure a cleaner, safer environment for all.”

Minister Brug echoed the importance of the initiative, applauding the dedication of local organizations and volunteers. He confirmed the Ministry’s support for the program and commended those contributing to its execution.

The initiative will be implemented in partnership with local veterinarians, non-profit groups like SXM PAWS, and international collaborators including 4 Leaf Rover, who have also expressed interest in supporting the program.

A report on the program’s progress will be submitted to the Ministry and Parliament within six months of its launch.

MP Lacroes further proposed a legislative amendment to introduce a fee on animal import permits, aimed at creating a long-term, sustainable funding source for future animal welfare initiatives.

This step marks a notable advancement in addressing long-standing concerns about stray animals and signals a broader commitment from both the government and Parliament to community well-being.
