Chairlady Wescot-Williams pays courtesy visit to Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana

ACCRA, GHANA--The President of Parliament, the Hon. Sarah A. Wescot-Williams, currently in Accra, Ghana to participate in and chair the International Conference on Gender Equality (ICGE-25) from November 20–22, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at Parliament House.

During the visit, the President and the Speaker, joined by Members of Parliament the Hon. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah and the Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, as well as parliamentary staff, held discussions on the role of women in society and development, and the importance of women’s participation in Parliament and in leadership positions.
Speaker Bagbin provided an update on the implementation of the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024 and the work of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, known as LiPS (Ladies in Parliamentary Service), emphasizing the need to maintain momentum. He also highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Ghana, St. Martin and the wider Caribbean.
The President and the Speaker further explored opportunities for collaboration and networking among parliaments and countries, underscoring the value of regional and international partnerships in advancing human development. President Wescot-Williams encouraged stronger cooperation between the Parliament of Ghana and the Parliament of St. Maarten to deepen diplomatic, developmental and parliamentary relations. Both Speakers agreed to exchange copies of their Constitutions and Standing Orders to support research, institutional development and mutual learning.
In the afternoon, President Wescot-Williams visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum and Museum, as well as Black Star Square, which was commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President, in 1957 to commemorate the nation’s independence.
